When and where did you first start bowling
Calgary Alberta – 1983 to 1986; then resumed in Milwaukee in 2000

What do you like about lawn bowling? What keeps you coming back?
First and foremost, lawn bowling is a great community of people, who care not a wit for anything but only if you enjoy the game. As for the game, when I learned lawn bowls is like a puzzle – choosing among a myriad of options the one shot that will yield the result you want – I was hooked. I also love that the game is hypnotic and takes you to a place where time stands still.

What brand and model of bowls do you use?
a. 10-12 second green – Drake’s Professional or Henselite Classic
b. 14-16 second green – Drake’s Professional

What size lawn bowls do you use?
Size four

How many sets of bowls do you presently own?
I own three but use only two.

What type of grip do you use? (finger-tip, claw, palm, other)
Claw grip, with all fingers on or between the dimples.

How do you initially select your line? (point on bank, spot on green, shoulder-arc of bowl, overall visualization of green, other)
I start with a point on the bank and then draw a line back on to the green, fixing my gaze on a spot about 1/3 way down green. Eventually I’ll just use the spot on the green unless mat gets pulled out.

What game do you prefer to play and why? (i.e. singles-pairs-triples-fours)
Pairs. I like the camaraderie, the strategy and shot selection process, and fact that I can blame someone else if all goes wrong! :-)

What is your goal during trial ends?
Finding the line.

In singles, do you usually take the mat or give it away?
Give the mat away…usually.

In a clutch situation, are you more likely to draw or drive? (assuming both shots could work)
Draw

What self-talk/mantras do you use during a game?
“Leads win games.” – “It’s just a draw!” (credit to Carl Landgren) – and my new favorite, “There’s always room for cream.”

Do you prefer whites or colored attire for tournament play?
Color!

Which is your favorite bowling green in US?
For playing – Sun City AZ, either Lakeview or Bell; for scenery – Laguna Beach CA. Then again, I like any green where I win!

What one rule of the game would you like to see changed?
The “hammer” rule – let’s go back to the way it was. If you win the end, take the mat. End of story.

What else would you like people to know about you?
I drive 80 miles for privilege of bowling on Saturdays in summer – married to a lovely woman who allows me to pursue my passion (or ‘obsession’ as she calls it) – have two young adult children who roll their eyes at the mention of lawn bowling – ordained Lutheran minister and work as director for international personnel
